Prof. Emer. Miljenko Lapaine, former Chair of the ICA Commission on Map Projections was elected an ICA Honorary Fellow at the ICC2019 in Tokyo

The Pre-Conference Workshop on Map Projections will be held on Sunday, 14 July 2019, 16:00-19:00 local time, in Teikoku-Shoin Co., Ltd. premises which is located three-minute walk from Exit A1 of Jimbocho Station on TokyoMetro Hanzomon line, Toei Shinjuku line or Toei Mita line. One of the most famous cartographers of our epoch, Prof. Emeritus Waldo Tobler passed away on 20 February 2018. He used computers in geographic research for over fifty years, with emphasis on mathematical modelling and graphic interpretations. Well known for his publications, he formulated the "first law of geography" in 1970 while producing a computer movie, and was the inventor of novel and unusual map projections, among which was the first derivation of the partial differential equations for area cartograms. He also invented a method for smooth two-dimensional mass-preserving area data redistribution. According to Tony Campbel, Waldo was a major figure in the analysis of the mathematics underlying cartography.

Map projections are mathematical procedures that enable the mapping of the earth's or other celestial bodies' curved surface to a plane. The curved surface is usually a sphere or a rotational ellipsoid. The theory of map projections is often referred to as the mathematic cartography. The goal of studying map projections is the creation of mathematical basis for making maps and solving theoretic and practical problems in cartography, geodesy, geography, astronomy, navigation and other related sciences.
